In Saint-Jérôme the Suburb Stops and the Bush Starts
That is what separates Saint-Jérôme from the cities further south. Bellefeuille, Lafontaine and the northern streets back straight onto Laurentian forest. Elsewhere a pest comes from the lot next door. Here it comes from woodland that does not end.
It changes the arithmetic for carpenter ants. In a closed suburb the parent colony is on your lot or your neighbour’s, and it can be found. On a forest edge it is in a stump outside anyone’s yard, on land nobody controls. We are not going to remove it, so we protect the building and hold the pressure back instead.
Old Saint-Jérôme works differently. Around the cathedral and rue Labelle it is older stock, plexes and shops, which means old openings and restaurant kitchens.
Carpenter Ants
A carpenter ant exterminator spends most of the spring on this here, and it is what the region searches for most. The ants do not eat wood, they hollow it out to nest in, and they need it damp.
What you notice first: large black ants indoors, fine sawdust under a windowsill, a balcony or a deck joint, and in May the swarm, winged ants all at once at the same window.
Why Saint-Jérôme: the forest is a permanent reservoir. A parent colony lives for decades in a stump in the woodlot behind you and swarms every spring. What reaches the house is satellite nests, and they settle in the first wet wood they find: a deck beam that was never flashed, the bottom of a garage door frame, a pergola built last summer.
What makes treatment work: treating in the knowledge that the source is staying put. We clear the satellite nests, dry out what attracts them, and on a lot backing onto bush the three-visit outdoor plan holds the season rather than six weeks. You get in writing what needs repairing.

Mice
Mice are the pest that fills our autumns. An exterminator for mice has one busy season here, and this is it. One mouse in September is a family by January.
What you notice first: droppings along a baseboard, about the size of a grain of rice, then scratching inside a wall or above a ceiling, loudest around dusk.
Why Saint-Jérôme: the fields and the woods come right up to the yards. Wasps
What you notice first: steady traffic in and out of one point: a soffit, the corner of a shed, a hole in the lawn. A nest is bigger than its entrance suggests.
Why Saint-Jérôme: calls peak in August. Big wooded lots produce ground nests as well as soffit nests, and the shed at the back of the yard comes up every year.
What makes treatment work: not doing it yourself. A disturbed nest defends itself, and hardware-store spray rarely reaches the inside.

Bed Bugs
The hardest pest on this page, and the one where do-it-yourself does the most damage.
What you notice first: bites in a line or a small cluster on skin that was uncovered overnight, then small dark spots near the mattress seam.
Why Saint-Jérôme: in a house it is almost always an object that brought them in. The apartment buildings downtown, around rue Labelle, get the other version, where they move between units, especially around 1 July.
What makes treatment work: preparation and a second visit. They survive months without feeding, so one pass rarely finishes it.

Cockroaches, Rats and Spiders
An exterminator for cockroaches treats a building, not a door. Roaches move through plumbing chases and shared walls, so in the downtown plexes and the restaurants on rue Labelle it is the building we plan for. Spiders and silverfish follow humidity rather than food, so an exterminator for spiders is usually looking at a damp basement. Both start at $399 indoors.
Rats are less common here than in central Montreal. What we see comes from the banks of the Rivière du Nord and from construction: an excavation moves a colony into the surrounding buildings within days. They need a bigger opening than mice, so the entry points can be found and closed. From $409, perimeter control $299, and $230 for a single rat.
