What the West Island Has in Common
Seven municipalities, and from our side of it they share three things that make the work here different from the rest of the island.
- Large lots and mature trees. Most of it was built between 1955 and 1985 and the trees planted then are sixty years old now, touching roofs and holding parent colonies. Carpenter ants lead almost everywhere out here, and the nest is usually outdoors rather than in the house frame.
- Outbuildings and storage. Sheds, decks, detached garages, pools, boats and woodpiles. On a large lot the undisturbed wood and the covered storage matter more than anything inside the walls, which is why the outdoor package often settles what an indoor visit will not.
- Almost no commercial reservoir. Very little industrial or restaurant land compared with the rest of the island. That makes rats genuinely uncommon here and keeps the mouse season short, concentrated in the six weeks after the first cold nights.
The practical version: out here the perimeter and the yard do more work than the interior, and September does more work than any other month.
The West Island Towns We Cover
Each of these has its own page, with what is specific to it:
- Pointe-Claire, where what you store in October is what you find in May
- Beaconsfield, where there is no commercial reservoir and the season is strict
- Kirkland, where the nest is in the yard rather than the house
- Dollard-des-Ormeaux, where the attached garage is the room nobody inspects
- Dorval, where bed bugs arrive by plane
- Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue
- Baie-d’Urfé
