Water on One Side, Open Land on the Other
Kahnawà:ke sits on the south bank of the St. Lawrence, directly across from Lachine and LaSalle, with the Mercier Bridge at its eastern end. The Seaway channel and its dyke run the length of the waterfront. Behind the built up area, the territory opens into fields and woodland toward Route 138 and the Châteauguay side.
That gives most properties here two pest fronts instead of one, and they behave differently.
- The water side. A dyke, a shoreline and a shipping channel are a continuous corridor. Rats travel it, and so do cluster flies looking for a warm south facing wall in September. Standing water in the low ground behind the dyke is the main mosquito source in July, and it is a yard problem rather than a house problem.
- The field side. Open land, hedgerows and farm edges push mice and voles toward whatever is warm in late October. Ground nesting wasps do well in the same edges through August. Properties backing onto open land get the classic autumn rodent wave, and the useful work is a perimeter seal in September rather than a treatment in November.
- The corridor. Route 132 and Route 138 carry commercial frontage and the traffic that comes with it. Rodent pressure concentrates near loading areas and bins, then moves into the nearest residential streets through back lots.

Additions Are Where Mice Get In
A lot of housing here has grown over time: an original house, then a wing, then a garage, added by different hands in different decades. That is good building practice and bad news for rodent proofing. The weak point is the joint where the addition meets the original wall. Sill plates rarely line up exactly. The gap is often hidden behind siding, and it is a straight run into the floor cavity.
We look at those joints first. A mouse needs an opening the width of a pencil, and it will find the one seam nobody has looked at in thirty years. Sealing there does more than any amount of bait, and it holds for years rather than weeks.
Carpenter Ants
Mature trees and older wood framing make this good carpenter ant country. They do not eat wood. They tunnel through it, and they need wood that is already wet. The usual sources are a gutter that has overflowed at one corner for years, a deck ledger that never dried out, or a porch post sitting directly on concrete. We look at where the water goes before we look at the ants. Fixing the water is what keeps them from coming back the following spring.

Wasps
June through September, with August the worst month. Aerial nests go under eaves, in sheds and inside hedges. Ground nests settle in loose soil at lawn edges and along fence lines, and people usually find them while mowing. If that happens, back off and leave it until evening. A disturbed ground nest sends out workers for hours. Do not pour anything into it: home remedies scatter the nest without reaching the queen.
Rats and Cluster Flies
Two things the waterfront brings that the field side does not. Rats use the shoreline and the dyke as a highway, and they show up near anywhere food waste sits outdoors. A rat needs a gap the size of a quarter. Check the garage slab, the shed floor and every pipe crossing the foundation. In a yard with children or animals, do not put poison down. Call and we will trap instead.
Cluster flies are the September nuisance. They gather on warm south facing walls in the afternoon, then work into the attic through the soffit vents to overwinter. They are harmless and they are maddening. Sealing the soffit line in late summer is the fix, not spraying in October.
