In Longueuil, the Neighbourhood Decides the Pest
Longueuil is two cities in one, and that changes the treatment. Old Longueuil, around rue Saint-Charles, is older stock and joined plexes: shared walls, shared basements, shared plumbing. One gap feeds several units, exactly as in Montreal.
Saint-Hubert and Greenfield Park are the opposite. Post-war bungalows and split-levels on big lots, attached garage, finished basement, mature trees. There, one job means one building. In between, the apartment blocks near the metro and along boulevard Taschereau behave like Montreal buildings.
Bed Bugs
The hardest pest on this page, and the one where do-it-yourself does the most damage.
What you notice first: bites in a line or a small cluster on skin that was uncovered overnight, then small dark spots near the mattress seam. They hide in seams, headboard joints and baseboards.
Why Longueuil: in a house it is almost always an object that brought them in, second-hand furniture or a suitcase. In the rental blocks near the metro and along Taschereau they travel between units, and 1 July moves them between the South Shore and the island with the furniture.
What makes treatment work: preparation and a second visit. They survive months without feeding, so one pass rarely finishes it. Store-bought sprays scatter them deeper into the walls.

Cockroaches
An exterminator for cockroaches is almost always treating a building rather than one apartment. Roaches move.
What you notice first: one in the kitchen at night when the light goes on. By the time you see one in daylight there are many more. Look for dark specks like ground pepper in drawer corners and behind the fridge.
Why Longueuil: in Old Longueuil and the Taschereau blocks they move between units through plumbing chases and shared walls. In a detached house they arrive in cardboard and stay put.
What makes treatment work: in a building, treating the units either side and the one below at the same time. Treating one apartment while the neighbours do nothing moves the problem next door for a month. If you rent, that is a conversation with the landlord.

Carpenter Ants
An exterminator for carpenter ants is really chasing moisture. The ants do not eat wood, they hollow it out to nest in, and they want it damp.
What you notice first: large black ants indoors and what looks like fine sawdust under a windowsill or a deck joint. In May comes the swarm, winged ants at a window all at once. That means an established nest.
Why Longueuil: the mature trees of Old Longueuil and Greenfield Park reach the rooflines, and a branch resting on a roof edge is a bridge. Add decks, sheds and pergolas: any wood that stays wet is a candidate, especially a deck ledger that was never flashed properly.
What makes treatment work: finding the moisture. Kill the nest and leave the leak and a new colony finds the same soft wood.

Mice
Mice are the pest that fills our autumns. An exterminator for mice has one busy season here, and this is it. One mouse in September is a family by January.
What you notice first: droppings along a baseboard, about the size of a grain of rice. Then scratching inside a wall or above a ceiling, loudest around dusk.
Why Longueuil: a mouse fits through a gap the width of a pencil. In an Old Longueuil plex that is the space around a pipe in a stone foundation, and the gap serves the whole building. In a Saint-Hubert bungalow it is the hardened seal at the bottom of the garage door, the dryer vent and the service entry. The farmland south of Saint-Hubert sends its share of field mice on the first cold night.
What makes treatment work: finding the entry points, not just placing bait. Bait alone drops the population for a few weeks, then the next ones use the same hole. You get the list in writing.

Wasps, Rats and Spiders
Wasps peak in August, when the colony is largest and most defensive. The spots repeat: the soffit above the garage, the eaves over a patio door, the underside of a deck, and ground nests in the lawns of Saint-Hubert and Greenfield Park. Do not take a can to it yourself, because a disturbed nest defends itself and hardware-store spray rarely reaches the inside. One nest is $189, a full-house treatment covering every nest we find is $259, and each extra nest is $39.
Spiders and silverfish follow humidity rather than food, so an exterminator for spiders is usually looking at a damp basement or a ground-floor bathroom. Both start at $399 indoors.
Rats are less common here than in central Montreal. What we see comes from the riverbank and from construction: an excavation moves a colony into the surrounding buildings within days. They need a bigger opening than mice, so the entry points can be found and closed. From $409, perimeter control $299, and $230 if it is a single rat.
